Graduate Students:
Ph.D. and Master’s Positions:
Graduate students in the Burmeister lab:
- Earn research-focused degrees with a role in all aspects of the scientific process (research design, protocol development, data collection and analysis, troubleshooting, writing, presenting)
- Are part of a collaborative and inclusive lab community
- Receive a strong focus on mentorship and professional development support towards post-grad school goals, including academia, industry, non-profit, government, and more.
- Have opportunities to mentor others, write fellowship applications, and present at conferences
- I have finished pre-screening for students to begin Fall of 2024.
- If you are a prospective graduate student interested in the lab for Fall of 2025, please check back in 2024 for a description of any open positions. At that time, complete a pre-application with me by email (details below). Students with research or work experience in microbiology, evolutionary biology, or both are generally a good fit for the lab.
- Students in the department are admitted directly into research groups. To reduce the number of formal applications the lab and the department receives, I use a pre-application and interview process to identify potential students before the official UWM deadline.
- I plan to review pre-applications in early Fall, so I suggest submission between late August into mid October for admission the following year. However, I do welcome inquiries at any time.
- If I do not reply, please feel free to follow-up with a reminder in 2-4 weeks. However, due to a very large number of applicants (for example, I had over 150 for the 2023 academic year), I do not have time to respond to all emails.
- If you are interested in applying for an open position, please send me an email including:
- Subject line "Prospective Grad Student for 2024"
- Introduction (your research background and relevant work experience)
- Why you are considering graduate school
- Your research interests, how your interests relate to your specific research and work experience, and how they relate to specific research areas in the Burmeister lab. It is best to review my lab website for current general projects, to read published papers from my lab, and to discuss specific projects you are interested in. This discussion should include specific research ideas and questions that build off of recent publications in the lab's active projects.
- Your CV or resume.
Postdoctoral Researchers:
Postdoc Positions in the Burmeister Lab:
- Variable length positions depending on your future goals and funding opportunities.
- Great mentorship for postdocs interested in academic research, teaching, or industry.
- Introduction (your education, research background, and work experience)
- Why you are considering a postdoc
- Your general research interests, my lab's projects you are interested in, and/or your new project ideas. (It is generally best to read a few papers from my lab and discuss those specific projects that you are interested in.)
- Any opportunities you have for external funding
- Your CV/Resume
- If I do not reply, please feel free to follow-up with a reminder in 2-4 weeks. However, due to a very large number of applicants (for example, I had over 150 potential trainees contact me last year), I do not always have time to respond to all emails.
